Active Transportation Count DatasetThe Pedestrian and Bicycle Count Dataset documents non motorized traffic on state highways, originating from Caltrans district pilots initiated in 2023 to monitor active transportation. Data is vendor-collected using technologies like video analytics, then shared with HQ via APIs or files for statewide standardization in CSV format. Core variables include Loc_id (site identifier), Date/Hour (timestamp), Direction, Count (integer volumes), and geospatial (latitude/longitude). Limitations include potential undercounts in adverse weather and incomplete coverage. This supports equity-focused planning under Complete Streets policies, with updates as pilots expand. We are conducting a short survey to better understand how bicycle and pedestrian data are currently used for planning, design, operations, maintenance, safety, and other transportation-related activities. 2024 Crash Data on State Highway SystemThe Crash Data On California State Highways Report is produced annually by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to provide high level summaries of road miles, travel, crashes and crash rates on the California State Highway System. This table lists statewide vehicle travel expressed in Million Vehicle Miles (MVM), road miles, and one and three year crash rates and fatality rates based on lane types and population codes. While crash rates for total crash and fatal + injury crashes are calculated per MVM, fatality rates are expressed per 100 MVM.
