CDIs in Hospitals, 2025
This table shows the January through December 2025 hospital-onset Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) data reported by California hospitals to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). Data were downloaded from NHSN on April 15, 2026.

| Column | Type | Label | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year | text | — | Year, 2025 |
| State | text | — | California |
| County | text | — | The name of the California county where the facility is located, derived from COUNTY_CODE in the FACILITY table in ELMS, obtained from the facility's license application form. |
| HAI | text | — | Clostridioides difficile Infection (CDI) |
| Facility_ID | text | — | The primary key used to track facility information for all facilities stored in the Electronic Licensing Management System (ELMS). The Facility ID is a 9 digit number. There is no Facility ID associated with STATE OF CALIFORNIA POOLED DATA. |
| Facility_Name | text | — | Hospital name for California general acute care hospitals reporting to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) in calendar year YYYY. State pooled data is also included in this field. Please see Map and ODP manual for hospital naming conventions. |
| Hospital_Category_RiskAdjustment | text | — | California general acute care hospitals are categorized into four major categories consistent with the categories NHSN uses for risk adjustment. |
| Facility_Type | text | — | This field contains sub-types of hospital categories specified in the Hospital_Category_RiskAdjustment field. Under the category Acute Care Hospital: Major Teaching; Pediatric Community, >250 Beds; Community, 125-250 Beds; and Community, <125 Beds. Under the category Rehabilitation Units and Free-standing Hospitals: Rehabilitation Unit; Free-standing Rehabilitation. The other hospital types match the hospital categories. |
| Infections_Reported | text | — | Count of hospital onset (HO) CDIs, excluding neonatal intensive care units and well-baby nurseries. (Inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) and inpatient psychiatric facilities (IPFs) with their own CCN numbers are also excluded; a rehabilitation unit (IRF) with its own CCN number reports separately from the rest of the hospital.) |
| Infections_Predicted | text | — | The predicted number of CDI based on the 2022 national baseline data, adjusting for significant risk factors outlined in the NHSN Guide to the SIR. |
| Patient_Days | text | — | A count of the number of patients in the hospital during a calendar year, excluding IRFs and IPFs with their own CCN numbers. A rehabilitation unit (IRF) with its own CCN number reports separately from the rest of the hospital. The values in this field are the sum of the daily counts in a calendar year. |
| SIR | text | — | The standardized infection ratio (SIR) is a summary measure used to track HAIs over time. It compares the number of reported HO CDI to the number of predicted number of HO CDI based on national baseline data. The SIR adjusts for several factors that may impact the risk of acquiring HO CDI. NHSN does not calculate an SIR for hospitals with predicted number of HO CDI infections <1. CDPH calculated an SIR if the predicted number of infections was <1 and >=0.2. The SIR and its comparison are not as precise as SIRs based on a larger number of predicted infections. |
| SIR_CI_95_Lower_Limit | text | — | Lower limit of the SIR 95% confidence interval calculated using exact Poisson distribution. The confidence interval quantifies the precision of the calculated SIR that is associated with random variation. NOTE: If the 95% CI for the SIR includes 1, the number of reported infections is not statistically different from that predicted. |
| SIR_CI_95_Upper_Limit | text | — | Upper limit of the SIR 95% confidence interval calculated using exact Poisson distribution. The confidence interval quantifies the precision of the calculated SIR that is associated with random variation. NOTE: If the 95% CI for the SIR includes 1, the number of reported infections is not statistically different from that predicted. |
| Comparison | text | — | The calculated SIR 95% confidence interval can be used to determine if the observed number of infections was significantly different than the predicted number of infections. Based on the SIR 95% confidence interval, we labeled each SIR as indicating: 'Better' (fewer observed infections than predicted), 'Same' (no significant difference in the number of observed and predicted infections), or 'Worse' (more observed infections than predicted). This field is blank if the predicted number of infections was <0.2. |
| On_Track | text | — | CDPH tracks each hospital’s progress in meeting 2028 national HAI reduction goals.. From 2024 to 2028, hospitals should achieve 20% reduction in CDI incidence (SIR<0.80). Hospitals are considered on-track to meet this goal if 2024 CDI SIR is less than or equal to 0.96. |
| Months | text | — | California hospitals are required to report data throughout each calendar year on a quarterly basis. NHSN data are downloaded in monthly units. This field indicates the number of months for which a hospital reported "complete" data, defined as a numerator (CDI cases or zero CDI) and a denominator (CDI surveillance-eligible patient days (which exclude neonatal and newborn nursery patient days)). |
| Notes | text | — | A hospital labeled "Incomplete Reporter" is a hospital reporting in-plan CLABSI data for fewer months than it was operational. See the Patient Safety Monthly Reporting Plan and Annual Surveys document (https://www.cdc.gov/nhsn/pdfs/pscmanual/3psc_monthlyreportingplancurrent.pdf) for NHSN's monthly reporting plan definitions. ¥ SIR was calculated by CDPH if the predicted number of infections was <1 and >=0.2. The SIR and its comparison are not as precise as SIRs based on a larger number of predicted infections. |
